File-sharing programs like Bearshare, Gnotella, KaZaA, Limewire, Morpheus, etc. turn themselves on without telling you. Your computer can then function as a server for others to download files.
Many file-sharing applications come with "adware" or "spyware" along with the file-sharing application. This software monitors your activity, sending information to third-party vendors and advertisers. Apart from privacy concerns, these add-ons use your computer's system resources to operate and slow it down.
It is your responsibility as a computer user at NIU to act legally and responsibly with regard to collecting and sharing MP3 files and other potentially copyrighted materials. Under federal law, NIU is obligated to investigate any allegations of infringement that it receives, and campus judicial action can result in some circumstances. See Copyright and File Sharing Facts for details.
